Set at the reverse angle to that of the standard plane the blade presents a scraping edge to the work, which is able to deal with the most awkward of timbers. Unlike the simple cabinet scraper the plane body bridges troughs and humps to ensure that the surface is kept flat. Although extremely effective and able to produce a finished surface, scraper planes do require a particular technique. Undoubtedly this No. 85 is the easiest to master with the blade set at the optimum non-adjustable angle and bedded against the body to resist chatter. The body is open at the sides allowing the blade to extend the full width of the sole. This combined with handles that tilt to either hand enables cutting tight to a face with full control of the plane and knuckles intact.
